Chapter 5 of 10

Graphics and parallel work

Thousands of small cores.

A different shape

A processor has a few fast cores for varied work. A graphics card has thousands of simple ones doing the same operation across huge amounts of data at once.

  • That suits pixels, physics, video encoding and training neural networks.
  • Video memory limits the size of the model or scene that fits.

Integrated and discrete

Integrated graphics share system memory and are fine for everything except games and heavy rendering. A discrete card has its own memory and its own cooling problem.
