Control of fire, stone tools and then farming are the changes that made everything after them possible, and each spread over thousands of years.
- Pottery, weaving and metallurgy followed settled life.
- Bronze then iron changed both farming and warfare.
The wheel and the axle
The difficulty lay in the axle, the bearing and the roads. Societies without suitable animals or terrain rationally did without wheeled transport.
