Perspectives
First person gives intimacy and limits, third person limited follows one consciousness, and omniscient narration can move anywhere. Second person is rare and unsettling by design.

- Unreliable narration puts the reader in the position of judge.
Tone and distance
How close the narration sits to a character, and how much it judges them, controls sympathy more than the events themselves do.
