Chapter 5 of 10
The senses together
Integration and conflict.
Multisensory
Perception combines sight, sound, touch and balance. In the McGurk effect, watching different lip movements changes which syllable you hear, whatever you know about the trick.
- Sight usually dominates conflicts, as with ventriloquism.
- Motion sickness comes from a mismatch between vision and balance.
Beyond the classic five
Balance, body position, temperature, pain and time all have sensory systems. The five senses list is a convenient simplification rather than a scientific one.
