Renaissance and Baroque

Perspective and drama.

Renaissance

Linear perspective, anatomy and classical revival produced a convincing pictorial space. Brunelleschi, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael defined the period in Italy.

  • Oil paint allowed slow blending and deep colour.
  • Patrons appear inside religious scenes surprisingly often.

Baroque

Movement, contrast and emotional intensity, designed to persuade. Caravaggio's lighting, Bernini's sculpture and elaborate church interiors served the Counter-Reformation.
