The main regions

A rough map.

Three levels

The brain stem runs breathing and heart rate. The cerebellum coordinates movement and balance. The cerebrum handles perception, thought, language and voluntary action.

  • The cerebrum divides into frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes.
  • Vision sits at the back, planning and inhibition at the front.

Deeper structures

The hippocampus is essential to forming new memories, the amygdala to threat and emotional salience, the thalamus routes sensory information, and the basal ganglia support habits and movement.
