Chapter 1 of 10

Reading is the job

The ratio nobody mentions.

Where the time goes

Most work happens in code somebody else wrote, often years ago. Being fast at understanding it is worth more than being fast at typing new code.

  • Every change starts with building a model of what is already there.
  • Reading well also makes you write more readable code, because you know what hurts.

Read with a question

Aimless reading does not stick. Arrive with a specific question, such as where a value comes from, and stop when it is answered.
