Chapter 8 of 10
Salary and job offers
The negotiation most people face.
Preparation
Research the range for the role, location and level. Know your minimum, your target and what else matters: flexibility, title, review date, training, holiday.
- Negotiate after an offer, not during interviews.
- The employer expects a conversation; asking rarely costs the offer.
How to ask
State a number with a justification, not a demand. If the salary is fixed, ask what else is flexible, because non-salary items often have more room.
