  • Conflating them lets each be used to dismiss the other.
  • Neither position is a fringe view within the research community.

Why ethics is not optional

Deployed systems make decisions about people: loans, hiring, policing, medicine. Any system with those consequences carries the same duties as a human process doing the same job.
