Other kinds

Regional, city, organisational and signal flags all follow the same visual grammar. Maritime signal flags encode letters and messages internationally.

  • The Olympic and United Nations flags are widely recognised organisational designs.
  • Pride and other movement flags use colour to signal identity.

Redesign

Countries and cities do change flags, usually after political change or a campaign against a poor design. New Zealand held a referendum in 2016 and kept the existing flag.
