Design principles
Simple wins.
The usual rules
Keep it simple enough to draw from memory, use meaningful symbolism, limit yourself to two or three basic colours, avoid lettering or seals, and be distinctive.
- Flags are usually seen small, moving and at a distance.
- Text reverses on the back, which is why it is avoided.
Breaking them well
Nepal is not rectangular, Switzerland and Vatican City are square, and several flags carry detailed emblems. Distinctiveness can outweigh simplicity when the design is strong.
