Chapter 9 of 10

Provenance and trust

When anything can be fabricated.

The problem

Convincing fake images, audio and video are now cheap. The absence of evidence of manipulation has stopped being evidence of authenticity.

  • Detection tools are unreliable and will stay behind generation.
  • Content credentials attach signed provenance at capture and editing time.

Everyday defence

Verify through a second channel, especially for anything urgent involving money or credentials. A voice on a phone is no longer identification.
