The central finding

People explain others by character and themselves by circumstance. Situations influence behaviour far more than most observers assume, which is the fundamental attribution error.

Conformity to a group majority is easy to demonstrate and hard to resist.
Obedience to authority runs further than people predict of themselves.

Careful with the classics

Milgram and the Stanford prison study are famous, ethically troubling and methodologically criticised. The broad conclusions survive better than the dramatic retellings.
