Continents and oceans

The basic divisions.

How many continents

Different countries teach five, six or seven. The divisions are conventions rather than facts, since Europe and Asia sit on one landmass and are separated by history rather than geology.

  • Asia holds about sixty percent of the world population.
  • Antarctica has no permanent population, only research stations.

The oceans

Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic, though they form one connected body of water. The Pacific alone covers roughly a third of the surface of the planet.
