Question formats
Where analogies appear.
Variations
Some tests give both words of the first pair and one of the second. Others give a sentence completion. Verbal reasoning tests for jobs often mix analogies with odd-one-out questions.
- Odd-one-out is the same skill: find the shared relationship and see which breaks it.
- Timed tests reward eliminating rather than agonising.
Preparation
Vocabulary breadth and relationship recognition are the two inputs. Reading widely handles the first; deliberate practice handles the second.
