Chapter 10 of 10
Resolving disputes
Court is the last option.
Before litigation
Complain in writing with dates and evidence, use the organisation's process, then an ombudsman or regulator where one exists. Mediation resolves many disputes far more cheaply.
- Small claims tracks handle modest amounts without lawyers.
- Keep records; a contemporaneous note carries real weight.
If proceedings start
Deadlines are strict and missing one can lose the case by default. Get advice early, since legal aid, insurance cover or a free clinic may be available.
