Test yourself
Attempting to recall, before checking, produces far better retention than rereading the same material for the same time. The effect is large and repeatedly replicated.
- Failing to recall and then seeing the answer still helps.
- Flashcards, practice questions and closing the book and writing what you remember all count.
Why it is avoided
Rereading feels productive and testing feels like failure. Judging study by comfort selects the least effective method available.
