Chapter 5 of 10
Sleep and consolidation
Where learning is finished.
What sleep does
Memories are consolidated during sleep, particularly in the hours after learning. Sleep deprivation harms both encoding beforehand and consolidation afterwards.
- A short nap after study measurably improves retention.
- An all-night session trades tomorrow's memory for tonight's coverage.
Other basics
Exercise, hydration and breaks are not motivational advice; each has measurable effects on attention and retention. The unglamorous inputs matter.
