Prejudice and contact
What reduces it.
Contact theory
Contact between groups reduces prejudice when the groups have equal status, shared goals, cooperation and institutional support. Contact without those conditions can make things worse.
- Cooperative tasks work better than shared space alone.
- Effects generalise beyond the individuals met, though weakly.
Implicit bias
Implicit association tests are widely used and have poor individual reliability and weak prediction of behaviour. Brief unconscious bias training shows little lasting effect.
