The largest tradition.

Core

Belief in Jesus as the incarnate Son of God, whose death and resurrection offer reconciliation with God. The New Testament joins the Hebrew scriptures as the canon.

  • Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant are the largest branches.
  • The 1054 schism and the sixteenth-century Reformation are the main divisions.

Practice

Worship, sacraments such as baptism and communion, prayer and service. Beliefs about authority, scripture and salvation vary widely between denominations.
