Sikhism and Jainism

Distinct traditions.

Sikhism

Founded by Guru Nanak in fifteenth-century Punjab. It teaches one God, the equality of all people, rejection of caste, honest labour and service, with the Guru Granth Sahib as living Guru.

  • The langar community kitchen serves anyone, without distinction.
  • The Khalsa and the five articles of faith date from 1699.

Jainism

An ancient Indian tradition centred on ahimsa, non-violence towards all living beings, along with truthfulness, non-attachment and rigorous asceticism for renunciants.
