Chapter 7 of 10

When it goes wrong

It will, and it is survivable.

Common failures

Technology fails, you lose your place, the room is silent, someone dominates. Each has a simple recovery and none is a disaster to the audience.

  • Know your talk well enough to give it with no slides.
  • Losing your place: pause, look at your notes, continue. Nobody minds.

Perspective

Audiences want you to do well and notice far less than you think. The mistake you replay for a week was invisible to almost everyone in the room.
