Checks that work

Read it aloud. Give it to someone outside the topic and ask what it is asking of them. Check whether the first paragraph would survive as the only paragraph.

  • Readability scores are crude and still catch bloated sentences.
  • If a reader asks a question the document answered, the answer was not findable.

Improving over time

Keep examples of writing you found clear and work out what they did. Imitating structure deliberately teaches more than reading style advice, including this course.
