Chapter 3 of 10
Words
Concrete and specific.
Choosing
Use the plainest word that is precise. Long words are not more professional, and technical terms are worth it only when they save the reader a sentence of explanation.
- Utilise means use. Commence means start.
- Concrete beats abstract: a number, a name, an example.
Nominalisations
Verbs turned into nouns drain energy: make an assessment, provide assistance, reach a decision. Turning them back shortens the sentence and restores the action.
