Bleeding and wounds

Pressure, and keep it there.

Serious bleeding

Apply firm direct pressure with anything to hand and keep it there. Add layers on top rather than removing soaked dressings, and call for help.

  • A tourniquet is for catastrophic limb bleeding when pressure has failed; note the time applied.
  • Wear gloves if available, for their protection and yours.

Minor wounds

Clean under running water, dry, and cover. Watch for signs of infection over the following days: spreading redness, heat, swelling and fever.
