First principles

Order of priorities.

Danger first

Check the scene before approaching. Traffic, fire, electricity, water and violence create second casualties, and a rescuer who is hurt cannot help anyone.

  • Then check response, airway and breathing, in that order.
  • Call emergency services early; the operator can guide you while help travels.

Do what you can

Bystander action changes outcomes, particularly for cardiac arrest and severe bleeding. Imperfect help promptly given beats perfect help that arrives late.
