Chapter 4 of 10

Choking

When the airway is blocked.

Mild and severe

If they can cough, speak or breathe, encourage coughing. If they cannot, alternate five sharp back blows between the shoulder blades with five abdominal thrusts.

  • Never do a blind finger sweep; it can push the object deeper.
  • If they become unresponsive, start CPR and call for help.

Infants

Technique differs for babies: back blows and chest thrusts rather than abdominal thrusts. That difference alone is a reason to take a course if you have young children.
