Chapter 6 of 10
Burns and scalds
Cool water, nothing else.
What to do
Cool the burn under running water for at least twenty minutes, remove jewellery and loose clothing near the area, then cover loosely with cling film or a clean non-fluffy cloth.
- No ice, butter, toothpaste or creams.
- Do not burst blisters; they protect the skin underneath.
When to get help
Anything larger than the casualty's palm, any burn to face, hands, feet or genitals, any chemical or electrical burn, and any burn in a child or older adult.
