Chapter 6 of 10

Giving feedback

Specific, timely, kind.

A usable structure

Describe the observed behaviour, its concrete effect, and the change you want. Judgements about character cannot be acted on; behaviour can.

  • Give it soon, while the example is fresh.
  • Ask for their view before concluding; you may be missing context.

Receiving it

Listen for the accurate part before defending the rest. Asking for an example turns a vague criticism into something you can actually work on.
