The cloud

Files on someone else's computer.

What it means

Cloud storage keeps your files on a company's servers and synchronises them to your devices. It is convenient, and it makes availability and privacy dependent on that company.

  • Sync is not backup: a deletion propagates everywhere.
  • Check what happens to your files if you stop paying.

Backups

Keep three copies, on two kinds of storage, one of them offline or in a separate service. Test a restore occasionally, because an untested backup is a hope.
