Chapter 2 of 10

Files and folders

Knowing where things are.

Structure

A path locates a file. Extensions tell the system which program should open it, and they can be misleading, which matters for email attachments.

  • Consistent naming with dates in year-month-day order sorts correctly.
  • Search works far better when files have meaningful names.

Formats

Editable formats can be changed and may carry tracked changes and comments. Fixed formats such as PDF preserve layout. Choose by what the recipient needs to do.
