The claims and the data

Popular books claim emotional intelligence predicts success more than cognitive ability. That is not supported. Ability-based measures show modest correlations with performance in people-facing roles.

  • Self-report questionnaires largely measure personality and self-confidence.
  • The underlying skills still matter, which is the honest version of the claim.

Why the overclaim spread

The idea is appealing, actionable-sounding and easy to sell as training. Popularity is not evidence, and this is a clear case of the gap.
