Managing emotions
Reappraisal over suppression.
What works
Reframing the situation, delaying the response, changing the environment and physical steps such as slowing your breathing all have support. Suppression costs effort and changes little.
- A pause of even a few seconds changes what you say.
- Sleep, food and exercise affect emotional control more than motivation does.
Not the same as calm
Managing emotion means responding usefully, not feeling nothing. Anger that produces a clear statement of a problem is well managed anger.
